Disney World is one of my favorite places to visit, so when I found out that one of my work conferences would be in Orlando, I was absolutely stoked. Obviously, I planned a post-work Disney trip to all four parks. I also realized that I could do one of my favorite pastimes – finding the best restaurants in new cities. I have been to Disney multiple times, but I have never eaten at any of the Disney World resorts. We always ate at the parks – or at Disney Springs. Well, I definitely had a field day this time around.
Anyone can make a reservation at any of the Disney World resort restaurants – you don’t have to be a guest at the resort to dine there. But you do have to make a reservation, or else they won’t let you onto the property. I believe the window to make reservations is 30 days in advance, if you’re not staying on Disney property.
Jiko – The Cooking Place
My very first meal on Disney World resort property was Jiko – The Cooking Place. Located in the Animal Kingdom Lodge, Jiko is a blend of traditional African, Indian and Mediterranean cuisine. The food here is flavorful and adventurous. And you have the added plus of being at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, which I think is absolutely gorgeous and so well themed. I absolutely loved every dish that I had here and am already planning my next trip back.

California Grill
My second meal was at the California Grill, one of Disney’s signature restaurants. Located on the 15th floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort, it offers guests spectacular views of the Magic Kingdom, especially during fireworks displays. The menu features fresh, seasonal ingredients by way of a 3-course tasting menu. You get your choice of an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert for $89 per person, at the time of writing.
A big shoutout to my waiter, Walter, go gave me the best recommendations. His ideal meal at the California Grilled ended up being my exact meal and it was absolutely fantastic. Get the Surf & Turf Roll, I guarantee you will not regret it. The Lemon Mousse with Olive Oil Poppy Seed Cake is also absolutely fantastic. Even if you don’t have space for it, make space for dessert.

Boma – Flavors of Africa
Another Animal Kingdom Lodge hit was Boma – Flavors of Africa. It’s a buffet, but don’t knock it until you try it. For $58 per person, you are treated to a fantastic buffet with a mix of American and African cuisines. There’s a little bit of everything for everyone – from your most adventurous to your most pickiest of eaters. We were treated to a feast of Tamarind BBQ Pork Ribs, African Spiced Beef Striploin, Oxtail Stew, Banana Leaf Wrapped Salmon, and Sweet Corn Pudding, amongst others. The dessert is also to die for – make sure you try the bread pudding!

‘Ohana
And lastly, we ventured over to the Polynesian Village Resort to visit ‘Ohana. ‘Ohana is a Polynesian-themed restaurant located at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, serving family-style meals with live ukelele music. You start off your meal with ‘Ohana bread with honey butter and salad. Appetizers include Honey-Coriander Chicken Wings, Fried Dumplings, and ‘Ohana Noodles with Mirin-Teriyaki and Stir-fried Vegetables. Your entree is the ‘Ohana Dinner Skillet with grilled teriyaki beef, spicy shrimp, and grilled chicken with Polynesian-inspired chimichurri sauce. The meal is finished with ‘Ohana Bread Pudding, a heaping serving of the most luxurious ice cream.
